Some 206 kilometers north of Manila, Philippines, where Muhammad Ali stood victorious after 14 grueling rounds against Joe Frazier in the "Thrilla in Manila", lies a quaint and creative mountain top city called Baguio.
While most of its neighbors boast Spanish influence, with churches and architecture remaining colloquial in design, words embedded, borrowed, and integrated, and traditions left as remnants of over 300 years of Spain’s colonial rule, Baguio and the rest of the north keeps close to their roots.
Along with their tribal brethren further up toward the mountainous edge of Luzon, many in the City of Pines live and breathe tradition. Set aside 48 years of American occupation, culprit to the blaring country music in the many American jeepneys converted into public transportation, the north has been relatively untouched. Keeping culture relevant, traditions unphased, their commune with nature and spirituality very much alive.
From these lands, born a handful of like-minded digital artisans, banding together for a common cause, caught between a world facing the imminent threat of a global pandemic, and the desire to build competitive solutions in a rapidly digitizing world.
All this while embodying the values, culture, and traditions instilled in them by their ancestors.
